“What do you do with a voice like that?"
The story of Congresswoman Barbara Jordan. When she spoke everybody listened, according to Past President Bill Clinton. This was the sentiment set forth on Saturday, February 9th at Peck Elementary where the Arts and Letters Committee presented “Remembering Soror Barbara Jordan" through the eyes of child. “What Do You Do with A Voice Like That? Is the title of a newly written children’s book by Chris Barton. Amidst a grand rocking chair, a cozy home setting, soulful soloist and an reenactment of Barbara herself. Members of the Chapter listened and learned about the life of Barbara Jordan and her impact in the community. After which a book was donated to a local school library and sorors were offered an opportunity to purchase the book and share with others within the community.
Delta Authors on Tour came to Houston
The Houston Alumnae Chapter sponsored the Delta Authors on Tour in the Southwest Region. The event, held at the historic Julia Ideson Building of the Houston Public Library System on May 4, 2019, highlighted six awesome authors of different genres, from children’s books to contemporary fiction. The authors, LaJill Hunt, Dr. Annetra Piper, Dr. Karen Senior, Angie Stubbs, and Brenda White shared information with the audience about their books that made those in attendance excited about the opportunity to purchase the books. The culminating speech, provided by Honorary Member Suzan J. Cook, brought the audience to their feet. On hand to participate in this festive and exciting event were members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and community members, including members of the Mayor’s office who provided a proclamation for the event declaring it “Delta Authors on Tour” Day in the city of Houston. Additionally, Houston was honored to welcome state, regional, and national officers, including Regional Director Michelle Brown; Co-Chair of National Arts and Letters Commission Gwendolyn Mason; National Secretary Soror Elsie Cooke-Holmes; and Past National President Cynthia M. A. Butler-McIntyre.
An additional component of the Delta Authors on Tour event was held on Friday, May 3, 2019. Several of the authors went to elementary, middle, and high schools in Houston ISD to read to the students, introduce their works to the students, and encourage them to become readers and writers. The authors also spoke with students at the University of Houston. A reception followed that evening for the authors and special guests.
